Even in 2021, it’s fair to say that there’s a stigma attached to erectile dysfunction. It’s a problem that all men want to avoid, and those who experience the issue normally keep it to themselves for as long as possible. Even if erectile dysfunction affects a relationship, men will rather do anything else than contact a doctor to speak about the issue. However, the important thing to note is that erectile dysfunction affects more men than you may realize. According to one survey, it affects 30 million men in the United States alone. Therefore, it also affects millions of men in the UK, Australia, and all other countries. Ultimately, your doctor will attempt to identify the cause of the problem. Why? Because this affects the prescription, you receive. For instance, two common causes of erectile dysfunction are high cholesterol and high blood pressure. In these cases, the prescribed medicine needs to reduce cholesterol or lower blood pressure. Alternatively, issues with hormones may lead to a hormone replacement. Finally, if it’s a side effect of another medicine, your doctor will change your prescription and see if this improves the problem. Without knowing the cause, doctors can’t prescribe the right medication.

Different Oral Medications

While most people think of Viagra when it comes to erectile dysfunction medication, many different types exist. They differ in terms of effects, how long it takes to come into effect, how quickly it wears off, and more. So naturally, your doctor will also consider any other medication you’re taking before letting you get prescriptions online, or locally at the pharmacy.

Sildenafil: starting with the most common, an example of Sildenafil is Viagra, and it’s best used on an empty stomach. Taken around an hour before sex, those with moderate erectile dysfunction find it lasts for up to five hours.

Vardenafil: Once again, this should be taken around an hour before sex, but it’s less affected by food. This being said, some research shows that products like Staxyn and Levitra are less effective after a high-fat meal since it doesn’t absorb as effectively. Like Viagra, the effects last for up to five hours. Scientists are working on a new form of Vardenafil that dissolves on the tongue rather than a pill.

Avanafil: This time, you’ll need to take the medication around 30 minutes before sex, but your doctor will explain how this is affected by your dosage. The effects will last for up to six hours this time, and an example is Stendra.

Tadalafil: Finally, Tadalafil is commonly taken through Cialis, and some people need to take it two hours before sex. However, it lasts for up to 36 hours. Additionally, some doctors prefer this form of oral medication because it’s easier to adjust the dosage.

Choosing a Prescription

Of course, it’s important to listen to medical professionals when treating erectile dysfunction. However, it’s also critical to note that the American College of Physicians equally sees all the above prescription types. Since they’re all effective, the choice comes down to cost, personal preferences, side effects, other medical conditions, ease of use, and other factors.

Unfortunately, there are some cases where medications aren’t possible. For example, those who take nitrate drugs for chest pain or another health issue may not be able to take drugs for erectile dysfunction. The same is true for those with serious liver disease, low blood pressure, or kidney disease. Before taking anything for erectile dysfunction, make an appointment with your doctor for tailored advice. With the right treatment, you can resume a normal sex life and regain your confidence once again!
