Bail out Hyundai while we're at it?

Posted by Scott "The Piper" St. Clair - November 10, 2008

Remember here a few days ago when the mucky-mucks of Detroit's Big Three automakers plus a representative from the United Auto Workers sat down to plead their case for billions and billions and billions of federal bailout dollars with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid?

Really...a moving sight.

Now our new president-elect is saying that bailing out Ford, GM, and Chrysler will be at the top of his to-do list in January.

Isn't that special!

That us poor dumb taxpayers are being forced to prop up failed businesses - the espresso stand on the corner is going belly up; is it next in line for a bailout? - isn't bad enough, I saw something today that just plain rubs salt into an open wound.

In the parking lot EFF shares with other businesses, sat a newer Hyundai Tucson SUV sporting an Obama/Biden bumper sticker. In case the irony of that is lost on you, let me explain.

The Hyundai Tucson is built in Korea in a factory that, to my knowledge, has no contract with the UAW nor is it American owned.  The person who bought this particular Hyundai, however, purports to support politicians who support bailing out an industry that he or she won't support by buying a product produced by that industry.

Got it?

Have you noticed how many cars sporting similar bumper stickers are foreign made?  Don't you find that a tad odd?  I sure do.

Get thee behind me, Volvo...

Before anyone gets all hot to go to dump our dough into bailing out a business, don't you think they first ought to do all they can to support the stinkin' business themselves? Like, don't buy that Hyundai, buy a Hummer instead?

Whose auto industry do these people want to bail out?  Where do I sign up to get my piece of this action?

Yeah, I own 2, north-American-built Fords. I'd prefer to support US-based business this way and NOT with my tax-dollars... Thank you very much!

Here's an idea: Take the $ they're talking about bailing out the auto-industry with and give it instead to the people that earned the money in the first place as a tax refund. A) Some of them would buy cars. B) Some of them work for the auto-industry. Double the help!
