Senate clears the way for higher taxes
Posted by Amber Gunn - March 09, 2010
The Senate voted
26 to 23 to suspend I-960's two-thirds requirement for tax hikes today.
Senator Hargrove's amendment also preserves the current requirement for advisory votes for tax increases not sent to voters first for approval. This means that every new tax passed by the legislature this year is going to be put directly in front of voters on the November ballot.
The suspension of the two-thirds requirement is only effective through the end of the current biennium (July 1, 2011).
