Remember I-960: Hold Your Legislators Accountable

Posted by Brett Davis - January 22, 2010

Lost in all the hoopla over Scott Brown’s upset victory over Martha Coakley in Massachusetts to fill the seat held by the late Ted Kennedy, as well as high-profile in-state bills on furloughs and abolishing the death penalty, is the fact that Washington state lawmakers are poised to suspend or modify I-960. Of course, it’s a prelude to a planned tax hike.

Passed by voters in November 2007, I-960 sets up a two-thirds threshold for raising taxes and mandates that the Office of Financial Management provide detailed cost analysis of all proposed tax increases.

We're happy to report The Tacoma News Tribune recently came out with an editorial in favor of maintaining I-960’s transparency provision.

You can check the take of your senators and representatives on I-960 here. Are they in favor of I-960’s two main provisions, or are they against them, or some combination of the two? Let us know what they say. We update the list daily (Monday through Friday).
