Health Care Watch for Thursday, November 5 - Repeat after me: No free lunch, no free lunch...

Posted by Scott "The Piper" St. Clair - November 05, 2009

Despite what you hear from Washington, you can't get something for nothing - there really is no such thing as a free lunch! But many in Congress who support the current health care proposals would like you to believe that there is, Election Day notwithstanding.

The American people know better, however. Their common wisdom, which is uncommon among politicians, gets it that the health care promises coming out of D.C. have a price tag. The free lunch of deficit reduction through slashing Medicare benefits while cleaning up the corruption that could have been cleaned up already with a government-option plan where bureaucrats make your health-care decisions in a scheme that jacks up taxes but doesn't offer benefits for years and years - well, that's not selling around kitchen tables across the country.

Even the Baucus Bill, often touted by health care affecianados as the most deficit-friendly, is chock full of phony assumtpions, cost curves that won't be "bent" to reduce the deficit, and more.

The more time passes, the more we know, and the more we know, the less we like. Just today we find this piece that discloses how those with pre-existing conditions would still have to wait six-months to enroll in the government option plan favored by Congressional leadership. Tell that to a cancer patient who hasn't got six months. Does the plan have a flowers benefit for an eventual funeral?

And the thinking behind Obama Care, as seen in other programs like stimulus spending, Cash for Clunkers, and others isn't working either. People viscerally get this - especially people who are wondering where all the promised new jobs are hiding. It's massive check kiting, which, instead of being punished as per the pic on the left, is lauded by the chattering classes as "leadership" and "statesmanship."

But does this mean Obama Care is dead? Some say so, but I think it remains to be seen. Tuesday's election results have liquified whatever solid ground was under the idea, but powerful forces in Washington, D.C. still are working overtime to whip the dog through no matter the cost or consequence.

Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Majority Leader Harry Reid will have their health care no matter how many are made sick by it or have their political careers killed by it. If that isn't an end-of-the-war bunker mentality, then I don't know what is. Commentator John Fund, in the immediately preceeding linked article, compared it to Maj. Nicholson's madness in the classic The Bridge On the River Kwai.

At the bottom of today's HC Watch, is a video depiction of how that madness will work itself out in an ordinary American home. I wouldn't want to be a child in this country right now for all the tuna in Tukwila.
