Gouging asphalt or taxpayers?
Posted by Scott Dilley - June 23, 2009
How many government workers does it take to install a rumble strip on a highway?
Six, at least according to the State Department of Transportation.
The Tacoma
News Tribune reports today that a rumble strip project on Highway 162 in the Puyallup Valley is being funded by $54,000 in federal funds for "shovel ready" projects. One worker will run the gouging machine while the rest of the half dozen workers will control traffic.
This story reminded me of
a performance audit from early 2008 that found only 60 percent of DOT workers are focused on transportation. The other 40 percent are for administration and overhead.
I hope the shovels used for these "shovel ready" projects aren't also used to bury us in debt.
