Washington State Patrol investigating votes for money on labor bill

Posted by Scott Dilley - March 11, 2009

The Employer Gag Bill/Worker Privacy Act appears dead due to an email purported to link action on the bill to campaign contributions.

In a joint statement, Gov. Chris Gregoire, Senate Majority Leader Lisa Brown, and House Speaker Frank Chopp stated they are "no longer considering action on House Bill 1528 and Senate Bill 5446, also known as the Worker Privacy Act."

The statement continues: "Immediately upon becoming aware of an email linking potential action on the bill to campaign contributions, bringing the bill forward was no longer an option. The email raises serious legal and ethical questions."

The Washington State Patrol is investigating. When I asked for a copy of the email in question from the Legislature, I was told the email is "the subject of an investigation by the state patrol and is therefore not for release."
